Make Me Beautiful: Jackson’s Proven Tips and Hacks for Transforming Your Skin, Hair, and Nails

I’ve been privileged to meet a lot of big influencers in the beauty arena, from hairstylists, to hair formula scientists and R and D scientists for major skincare lines. I want to share some of what I’ve learned from them specifically about how to get beautiful hair, skin, and nails by boosting keratin and collagen production in the body.

My next big project, in fact, is going to be a whole beauty book. I’ll pack it full of makeup tips for girls, hairstyling and hair growth tips for guys and gals, and all kinds of great recommendations on getting the best skin you’ve ever had in your life.

I do want to preface this chapter with a word about my philosophies on beauty.

When you feel beautiful inside, healthy and full of energy and lightness, you radiate beauty. It shines like a glow from deep within you. Your smile lights up your glowing face and your skin will naturally be infused with light, color, and a sense of tranquility that makes you, well, simply beautiful.

That kind of outer beauty can only come from achieving harmony within and without—taking care of yourself and nurturing as well as changing yourself.

Good sleep is CRUCIAL—ask any model. There is no makeup or moisturizer as good as a good 8 to 10 hours of reparative, collagen-synthesis promoting sleep. You also want to take care of the skin, the envelope you live within your entire life. You can have a wrinkled, dusty, somewhat tattered and abused envelop or a glossy one that’s obviously been cherished.

Good nutrition is essential.

I also believe strongly that when you nourish the spirit it shows from within. The healthier your soul, your aura, if you will, the more color shines through your skin and glimmers all around you. Now, let’s talk about how to nourish the outer—the envelope for all your inner beauty.

Let’s start with skin—I have so many great tips and recommendations for you on compounds you can buy now very affordably that literally turn back the clock years in mere weeks. Huge advancements have been made in skincare in the past three years that have enabled us to create compounds that nourish the fibroblasts and infuse them with hyper-energy that promotes those fibroblasts to go to work, producing collagen and elastin like crazy, no matter how old you are! First, let’s talk about taking care of your skin every day. Most dermatologists swear by a simple three-point plan, cleanse, polish, and nourish.

When asked how to care for the skin in the healthiest way possible, dermatologists swear by a three-point plan:

  1. Polish
  2. Cleanse
  3. Nourish

Polish

Polishing the skin entails exfoliation. There are all kinds of skin polishers and scrubs on the market today that are very effective at stimulating new cell turnover and collagen synthesis without damaging the surface layer of the skin.

Polishing the skin helps you accomplish all kinds of goals It helps you remove dead skin cells, gives your skin a healthy, rosy glow, stimulates the production of epidermal growth factor, accelerates cell turnover and plump up your skin by creating controlled inflammation.

Cleanse

When you clean your skin, there are all kinds of hypoallergenic soaps like Cetaphil and CeraVe which are very easy on the skin but effectively remove dirt, bacteria, and fungi from the skin. When looking for a cleanser, look for ingredients like salicylic acid or alpha hydroxy acids (AHA) on the label.

Nourish

To nourish your skin after cleansing, you want to moisturize your skin. You can use serums, lotions, creams, formulas.

Good ingredients to look for in a basic moisturizer include anti-oxidants like vitamins C and E, peptides, and pentapeptides. You want to pick a nourisher that feels really good on your skin, like your skin is drinking it up and saying “Yes, that’s the stuff we need.”

Experiment. There are all kinds of skin nourishers on the market today from super hydrating water-based moisturizers to heavier creams full of nourishing compounds that feed your skin like food from without.

Moisturizers basically plump the outer layer of the skin. They do not penetrate into the deepest layers of the dermis.

Skin: What to Eat and What to Avoid for Beautiful Skin

First, let’s talk about nutrition. You will never have beautiful skin without eating good, antioxidant rich foods. The foods you eat will determine how beautiful your skin looks and can make all the difference between skin that is puffy, acne-ridden, and inflamed versus hydrated, taut, and plumped up.

By eating a diet rich in protein and other collagen-building vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and phytonutrients, you are sure to supply the body with all the compounds you need to stay youthful and glowing and antioxidants will help protect you from aging and give you that pink, healthy bloom you want in your cheeks.

 

What to Avoid in Foods: The Bad and the Ugly for Beautiful Skin

Sugar and Refined Carbs—Why They Harm Skin

Sugar, saturated fats, and refined carbohydrates age the body. Sugar actually ages the skin through a process called “glycation” –creating AGES – advanced glycation end products that are caused by sugar molecules binding proteins that begin eating away at collagen and elastin strands and aging the skin.

Sugar also causes inflammation in the body.

Not only is sugar in and of itself an inflammatory food, sugar and other highly pesticide-d crops (coffee, tea, rice, tobacco) are literally bombed with DDT and pesticides in some countries and when these poisons enter the body, they set off your body’s alarm response and cause your body to inflame, and attack its own tissues. This will cause puffiness, water retention, drain you of energy, and send insulin soaring, which can lead to system-wide inflammation, causing all kinds of skin disorders from rosacea to eczema and weakening the collagen and elastin, ultimately causing aging and wrinkles as well.

Refined carbohydrates and foods with a high glycemic index also cause insulin spikes and inflammation, if you eat them too often, especially refined grains like white bread, white rice, white flour.

Saturated Fats and Trans Fats

Unlike healthy fats in oils derived from avocado, coconuts, and olives, saturated fats, trans fats, and all the industrial seed oils are extremely aging and damaging to the skin.

Smoking

Smoking not only overworks the muscles of the face and causes wrinkles around the mouth, that smoke curling up to your face every time you take a puff is also aging you like crazy.

A recent study found that smokers have a 3x greater risk at developing premature wrinkles than non-smokers.

The Sun

As you probably know by now, the sun is the enemy of youth, prematurely aging skin and causing wrinkles and saggy skin. Stay out of it as much as you can except for early morning sun to keep your Circadian rhythms regulated.

Drinking too Much Alcohol

Alcohol is a major dehydrator literally sucking all the moisture out of your skin. If you must drink, do it in moderation, dears.

 

The Best Foods for Beautiful Skin

Blueberries, Raspberries, Blackberries

Berries are packed with phytochemicals, phytonutrients, and antioxidants. One benefit of bitter berries is these plants use this bitter taste as a defense mechanism to fight off munching animals and harsh weather as well. These plants’ defense mechanisms ae profoundly healthy for us. Natural antioxidants protect us from all the slings and arrows of the environment and aging.

Carrots

Carrots are rich in both beta carotene and vitamin C. Vitamin C is a highly necessary nutrient in the creation of collagen. In fact, we cannot manufacture either elastin or collagen without it. Carrots also contain carotenoids, a type of phytonutrient that protects the skin from UV damage.

Tofu

Tofu is great for counteracting environments that are unfriendly to skin and hair. Why? Because tofu is super rich in vitamin E and calcium, and these compounds help to both of undo the damaging effects of the sun and the environment. This is because both calcium and vitamin E help to repair the skin at a cellular level, helping improve tone and elasticity.

Avocado  

Avocados contain healthier forms of poly- and monounsaturated fatty acids, which protect your skin from sun and harsh environmental pollution. Monounsaturated fats are especially important for the moisturizing layer of your skin to keep it dewy and youthful-looking.

 

Sweet Potatoes: The Ultimate Superfood for Skin

Sweet potatoes are known for having high levels of beta-carotene, which is converted to an active form of vitamin A (retinol) once ingested. Vitamin A is required for cell production and growth. An increased intake of vitamin A may help to increase healthy skin cell production.

Anthocyanins are another highly bioavailable nutrient in sweet potatoes that can have anti-aging properties. Anthocyanins are a type of flavonoid antioxidant. Antioxidants can have anti-aging properties because they neutralize free radicals. Cellular damage can occur at all tissue levels and can increase the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Sweet potatoes also contain vitamin C, which is both an antioxidant and vital in the production of collagen. Collagen is the main component in the skin and other connective tissues, including hair and nails.

Sweet potatoes also contain elements that can serve as natural moisturizers, including potassium and pantothenic acid.

Embryonic Foods: The Key to Collagen Synthesis

Embryonic foods? What do you mean, eating an egg with the chicken still in it, like they do in some countries? No guys. The term “embryonic foods” refers to foods like eggs, beans, and seeds—foods that contain an embryo in a shell. So, any foods like those little nesting dolls that have a surprise tucked inside that it also edible.

Beans, such as fava, kidney, and lima beans are also embryonic foods. They came in pods. But these pods are discarded, because most individuals like eating the meatier bean within the pod of these legumes.

Here’s what I’ve been learning about embryonic foods like these: they are wonders for skin health—especially wondrous for promoting very youthful skin!

These foods within foods contain a vital nutrient-dense blend of nutrients, amino acids, vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients which are amazing for skin health and which spur on new collagen growth and collagen turnover as well.

Think about seeds. See, everything that plant needs to grow and thrive is packed inside these protective membranes.

That’s why seeds such as flax seeds and sunflower seeds are such nutrient-dense powerhouses in themselves, packing not just a good wallop of protein but also vitamins, antioxidants, and Omega 3 fatty acids as well! Think about it from a holistic perspective for a minute—to ensure the survival of plants – actually—a seed can be eaten by an animal, pass through their digestive tract, be excreted on the ground, and grow into a whole new plant again.

Thus, assuring that all the roving animals of the world don’t completely wipe out plant life. Amazing.

In order to assure this perpetuity of life, all those compounds are packed within that protective seed – both the seed and the embryo within, we’re learning, are great for the skin.

Embryonic foods just happen to contain just about every collagen-boosting ingredient imaginable—like amino acids (eggs, beans, and seeds), antioxidants, which inhibit damage to collagen (pomegranates and goji berries are great) and good fats (like walnuts and avocado). These foods help replenish collagen stores and keep us youthful.

What’s amazing about these embryonic foods is that they contain all the fats, fatty acids, vitamins, mineral, and collagen synthesis stimulating compounds we need to keep our skin as beautiful and young-looking as we can.

Beans are packed with sulfur, the beauty mineral, which is crucial for collagen production.

Eggs, perhaps the most important food to eat for collagen production, are packed with amino acids, as well as two of the chief amino acids we need for collagen production itself, lysine and proline. In fact, the chief food sources of lysine and proline are all embryonic foods – eggs, beans, nuts, seeds, and legumes.

In fact, egg membranes actually contain collagen — a type of collagen called collagen types one and four, which are biologically identical to the collagen found in human skin! In one study, in fact, scientists have actually found that that collagen in egg membranes is a powerful wrinkle reverser and can actually suppress aging.

Before I move on, I wanted to reassert the importance of reaching for Omega 3-rich eggs for beautiful skin. In fact, pasture-raised chickens are actually fed flaxseed—another wonder embryonic food for stimulating collagen production—so these eggs are doubly rich in youth promoting compounds for collagen synthesis!

Fatty Fish  

Think fatty fish to nourish your skin with the kind of healthy fats that keep skin youthful, dewy, and plumped up. Fatty fish also help decrease inflammation in the body with Omega-3 fatty acids, which also help moisturize skin. They are also good sources of beautify vitamins and minerals like protein, vitamin E, and zinc.

Omega 3s in fatty fish also have sunscreen properties which help to protect the skin from the harmful UV rays.

 

The best fatty fish for skin:

Albacore tuna, salmon, mackerel, herring, sardines, anchovies, swordfish, trout, pollock.

Jackson’s take on fish oil pills:

Many of the OTC fish oil pills have been found to have high levels of mercury or to contain very little Omega-3 fatty acids. A much better choice?? Food, always, good, organic, fresh caught or wild choices for fish. Don’t trust supplements for your health unless they are high quality, food- based supplements. Another good choice? Blue Ice Fermented Cod Liver Oil. It’s a natural source of Omega 3, 6, 7 and 9 fatty acids.

Healthy oils and fats

Healthy oils and fats are essential for healthy skin, nails, and hair.

Sunflower seeds are an excellent source of proteins, vitamins like B, E, zinc, iron, potassium, magnesium, and calcium.

Olive oil contains monounsaturated fatty acids, which promote a beautiful complexion.

Olive oil help keep skin smooth, taut, juicy, and dewy. They are essential for healthy skin and hair. They also keep the hair thick and shiny.

Coconut oil—the people of Polynesia are famous for their long, lustrous hair and beautiful skin. It is believed that all the coconut oil, a chief staple for them, is the reason for this.

Seeds

Seeds are a great source of healthy Omega-3s, which fortify the hair and scalp, providing a rich store of hard-to-get minerals and phytonutrients as well as high healthy fats.

Chia and pumpkin seeds are my favorite recommendations because they pack a wallop of powerful skin-nourishing compounds such as iron, magnesium, protein, iron, and omega-3 fatty acids. Rich in both fatty and amino acids, you’ll get all the compounds necessary for collagen production, the key compound you need for skin, hair, and nails.

Cutting Edge Skincare Ingredients to Look for in Your Products

What is fascinating about skin care right now is we are just really beginning to find out about some compounds which actually do reverse aging and promote collagen synthesis – the manufacture of new collagen and keratin to promote the youth of the skin.

We’ve only been looking for this forever. I mean, skincare scientists are really finding ways to turn back the clock.

Besides artificial means of injecting and replacing lost collagen until now, this has only been just as much of a dream as discovering the fountain of youth Ponce de Leon so stringently believed in.

Retin A

Prescription retinoic acid (like Retin-A) and OTC retinol are oldies are now pretty well known about. But that doesn’t mean they don’t work. It means that they’ve stood the test of time because they do work.

The way retinoic acid and retinol wok is to “turn on” or activate the genes that make collagen production happen. They also help organize collagen cells which results in skin appearing thicker and plumper. A recent study (Kong, 2015) found that a .1% retinol treatment used over four weeks increased procollagen types I and II and reduced wrinkles after 12 weeks.[1]

You can get pharmaceutical grade retinol from your family physician, who will gradually step you up to a .5% solution (Retin A).

 

Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic acid is one of my favorite skincare treatments. Think of it as a super-hydrator. It keeps skin-ultra dewy by because it contains a very potent moisture-attracting compound already present in skin that helps us to retain more water in the moisturizing layer of our skin. Hyaluronic acid also stimulates collagen production by stretching fibroblasts where they are bigger and, thus, help create thicker, more plumped-up, youthful skin.

Neodermyl

Neodermyl is a new wonder ingredient we all need to start looking for in our skincare products. Our skin ages because our fibroblast cells, the cells which manufacture collagen and elastin, gradually lose energy once supplied by the skin’s mitochondria and thus, collagen and elastin production gradually slows and completely stops. What Neodermyl does is to provide a form of bioenergy to these fibroblasts which turns them back on, re-stimulating collagen and elastin production to the skin. In studies, Neodermyl proved to

Signaling Proteins from Snails

I predict this new ingredient is going to be big, big, big. Why? Lab research shows these proteins, a growth factor extracted from dormant stem cells in snails, actually grow into collagen producing fibroblasts in human skin. WOW. More fibroblasts means more collagen and elastin and WE AGE BACKWARD! There is still some controversy surrounding snail signaling proteins. We’ll keep watching on this one!

Phaseolus Radiatus Meristem Cell Culture Extract

Phaseolus Radiatus is actually mung bean! This cutting-edge ingredient has shown amazing ability to increase skin cell activity, synthesize collagen and elastin, and accelerate new cellular proteins.

Pentapeptide-48

Pentapeptide-48 is a topical peptide that supports stem cell regeneration in the skin. It also stimulates the production of elastin and collagen. A recent study found that pentapeptide-48 improves the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and whitened and lightened skin as well. Matrixyl Synthe’6

Winner of the In-Cosmetic’s 25 Years of Innovation Award in 2015, this powerful anti-wrinkle peptide combines 6 skin-rebuilding essentials. This peptide mimics matrikine, a human extracellular matrix-derived peptide in the skin. By doing this, the peptide stimulates the skin’s natural repair mechanisms and stimulates production of Collagen I, II, IV, fibronectin, hyaluronic acid, and laminin 5). The results? Injectable hyaluronic acid fillers (examples Juvéderm and Restylane).

Hyaluronic acid is naturally contained throughout our bodies, skin, and joints. Today, hyaluronic acid is used to plump up veiny, bony hands, thin lips, ear lobes, and to plump up shallows and hollows on the face to keep the face youthful and filled out. Fillers made from HA help maintain and restore dewy hydration to the skin, help volumize the skin and hands and even help to stimulate new collagen growth. Chemical peels also tighten and rejuvenate the skin encouraging new skin cell growth and are very popular with people who want to reduce the appearance of acne scarring, sun damage, and deep wrinkles. Repeat procedures are typically required to remove deep wrinkles—but they work.

Oxygen Facials

Oxygen facials are extremely popular today with celebrities like Madonna. With oxygen facials, a high compression machine pushes pressurized oxygen and small-moleculed skincare products (of your choice) into the skin like botanicals, vitamins, or hyaluronic acid. The results? Plumped-up skin, with fewer visible lines or wrinkles.

Botox

Botox continues to be the favorite cosmetic treatment of the stars and public alike. Botox uses injectable fillers to smooth out lines and wrinkles and create a more youthful, rested look.

Thermage®

Thermage, a favorite treatment of Gwyneth Paltrow, is a non-surgical tightening procedure that uses radiofrequency to stimulate collagen production. Thermage uses heat to tighten underlying layers of the skin, reducing the appearance of sagging jowls or skin in the neck or brow area. 

Liquid Face Lift

The liquid face lift can last up to two years. With this procedure, injectable gel fillers like Juvederm or Restylane are used to reduce wrinkles, plump up hollows, and create a more youthful face.

Juvederm and Perlane are cheek fillers which help women to retain sculpted, high, plumped up cheekbones into adulthood, recreating a look of youthful beauty.

Cryolipolysis or Cool-sculpting

Cool-sculpting isn’t new but – boy, it sure is becoming popular. Cool-sculpting targets resistant fat pockets on the stomach or buttocks, and uses handheld paddles to freeze and suck the fat out of the skin, which also destroys the fat cells under the surface of the skin—meaning those fat cells stay dead. The body naturally eliminates the fat after a firm massage loosens the frozen puddles of fat. More than one session is often required and results can take up to three months to see big results.

Skin: Conclusion

So, there are all kinds of fascinating things happening in the world in terms of anti-aging, both in terms of external and internal treatments and applications to keep us youthful.

What we all want, ideally, is that juicy, plump, dewy skin we had as babies. Don’t you want those plumper, younger looking skin?

To get more vitamin A in your diet, embrace foods like grass fed liver, fatty fish, cod liver oil, eggs, grass fed butter, caviar, pate, and “smelly” cheeses from blue to cheddar to Limburger.

Vitamin C

I know a female who grew her hair out six inches in several months eating gelatin daily with organic, low sugar whipped cream for snacks and who’s almost got a full hair of head now after suffering with thin, brittle, non-growing hair since suffering anorexia in her teens. I strongly suggest this for people experiencing thin, brittle hair and slow hair growth.

Cleaning and care: Use a small toothed comb daily to distribute natural oils and sebum to the ends of the hair. This will give you an accurate picture of how much conditioning you’ll need that day or the next without over conditioning the hair.

Wash hair only every other day. Use shampoos without sulfates to prevent damaging or drying straight hair.

Style: For volume, blow dry the hair upside down or blow dry with a round brush, starting at the crown and then moving to the ends of hair with a round brush.

Wavy Hair: Wavy hair can become overly frizzy with over processing or over-styling. Wash hair only two to three times a week. Use dry shampoo for the in-between days.

Use a deep conditioner twice a month to keep your hair silky and soft. A great conditioning agent for wavy hair is argan oil or coconut oil.

Curly Hair is full of volume and can vary from fine to ultra-coarse. Hair can become ultra-frizzy with over-processing. The greatest challenges for curly hair types are frizz, lack of shine, lack of curl definition, shrinkage and dryness.

Clean/care: Wash your hair just once or twice a week. Over-shampooing with strip al the moisture out of curly hair more quickly, so make sure to apply some leave-in conditioner or argan oil.

Use a deep conditioning treatment at least once a week—it is best done the day before the day you wash your hair. This will keep your hair silky without letting it get too oily.

 

Nails

There are much more effective treatments to strengthen brittle, peeling, or breaking nails than the paint on nail hardeners.

First, try supplementing with 2.5 mgs. of biotin a day. Not only will this strengthen nails but hair as well.[20],[21]
